Archival Overview
Master American abstract painter and sculptor whose large-scale calligraphic scribbles, graffiti-like marks, and poetic invocations of classical mythology redefined post-war contemporary art.
Biographical Record
Edwin Parker 'Cy' Twombly Jr. studied at Black Mountain College in North Carolina alongside Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. In 1957, drawn to Mediterranean antiquity and mythology, he relocated permanently to Rome, Italy.
Twombly created a radical visual language fusing drawing, writing, and painting, scrawling fragments of Homer, Virgil, and Rilke across vast white canvases like ancient graffiti. In 1995, the Menil Collection in Houston opened the dedicated Cy Twombly Gallery designed by Renzo Piano, and in 2010 he painted a permanent ceiling for the Salle des Bronzes at the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
