Visionary Siksika leader who navigated the extinction of the buffalo, fostered peace with the North-West Mounted Police, and negotiated Treaty 7 in 1877.
Biographical Record
Isapo-muxika, known as Crowfoot, was one of the most respected warrior-statesmen of the Great Plains. Rising to head chief of the Blackfoot Confederacy, he recognized that the encroachment of European settlers and the collapse of bison herds required astute diplomatic pragmatism.
Crowfoot established mutual respect with Colonel James Macleod of the NWMP and led his nation into Treaty 7 in 1877. In his poignant final words, he reflected on life as 'the flash of a firefly in the night, the breath of a buffalo in the winter time'.
