Biographical Record
Born in Amsterdam and raised in Bavaria, Krieghoff immigrated to the United States and served in the Seminole War before following his French-Canadian wife Émilie Gauthier to Montreal in 1840. Fascinated by local customs, he began documenting daily life in the St. Lawrence Valley.
Krieghoff painted hundreds of spirited, narrative scenes of habitant merrymaking, country inns, birchbark canoes, and blazing autumn forests around Quebec City and Montmorency Falls. His paintings were avidly collected by British garrison officers, providing posterity with an incomparable pictorial record.
