Dutch-born Swedish troubadour and poetic genius whose gritty blues-infused ballads and masterful adaptations of Carl Michael Bellman revitalized the Swedish ballad tradition.
Biographical Record
Cornelis Vreeswijk was born on August 8, 1937, in IJmuiden, Netherlands, emigrating with his family to Ekerö, Sweden, at age twelve. Starting as an orderly at Mentalsjukhus and social worker, his gravelly baritone and linguistic genius made him a sensation upon his 1964 debut album Ballader och oförskämdheter.
Singing with visceral humor, jazz chords, and compassionate realism about drunkards, drifters, and outcasts, Cornelis created iconic characters like Fredrik Åkare and Cecilia Lind. His definitive recordings of Carl Michael Bellman's 18th-century epistles reconnected modern Sweden with its ancestral bardic roots. Despite personal struggles with tax authorities and addiction, his immense poetic warmth made him one of Sweden's most cherished cultural legends.
