Archival Overview
Legendary Colonel of the National Liberation Army (ALN) who commanded Wilaya VI, securing the vast expanse of the Algerian Sahara against colonial partition.
Biographical Record
Ahmed Ben Abderrazak Hamouda, known as Si El Haouès, was born in the Aurès foothills of Biskra. Entering the nationalist struggle through the MTLD, he was tasked by the FLN in 1955 with extending the armed revolution south into the Sahara Desert.
Promoted to Colonel and supreme commander of Wilaya VI, Si El Haouès outmaneuvered French armored columns across thousands of desert kilometers. On March 28, 1959, while traveling to Tunisia alongside Colonel Amirouche, their headquarters was surrounded by thousands of French paratroopers at Djebel Thameur; both heroic commanders fought to the death in an immortal epic of resistance.
