Archival Overview
Brilliant young guerrilla strategist who succeeded Si El Haouès at age twenty-five to command Wilaya VI, liberating massive tracts of the Algerian Sahara before independence.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Chaabani was an outstanding student at the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema schools in Biskra before joining the ALN in the Aurès mountains at age twenty-one. Demonstrating exceptional strategic acumen, he became chief of staff to Colonel Si El Haouès.
Upon Si El Haouès's death in 1959, the 25-year-old Chaabani was promoted to Colonel—the youngest in the entire ALN. He reorganized the southern front, winning major engagements across the desert and triumphantly ensuring that the mineral-rich Sahara remained an integral part of independent Algeria.
