Archival Overview

Fabled Algerian military commander whose peerless mountain warfare tactics and iron discipline in Wilaya III made him a legendary figure of the National Liberation Army.

Biographical Record

Amirouche Aït Hamouda (1926–1959) rose rapidly through the ranks of the ALN due to his tactical genius, charismatic leadership, and ascetic devotion to Algerian independence. He organized the security logistics for the historic 1956 Soummam Congress in the heart of Kabylia right under the noses of colonial surveillance.

Promoted to Colonel commanding Wilaya III, Amirouche turned the Akfadou and Djurdjura peaks into impenetrable fortresses, inflicting punishing losses on French forces. While traveling toward Tunis alongside Colonel Si El Haouès, his unit was ambushed at Djebel Thamer by thousands of French paratroopers, fighting to the death in an epic six-hour gun battle.
