Biographical Record

Colin Winter was consecrated Bishop of Damaraland (Namibia) in 1968 and immediately denounced South African racial segregation and the contract labor system as akin to modern slavery. He moved the bishop's office directly into the Black township of Katutura.

During the massive general strike of 13,000 Namibian migrant workers in 1971-1972, Winter provided legal aid, food, and public theological support. Expelled from Namibia by the South African regime in 1972, he remained 'Bishop of Damaraland-in-Exile' in London, advocating for SWAPO and Namibian freedom until his death.
