Biographical Record

Cochise was born into the Chokonen band of Chiricahua Apaches. After being falsely accused of kidnapping and attacked under a flag of truce by Lt. George Bascom in 1861, Cochise escaped and launched an all-out war of resistance against American military intrusion.

Using the labyrinthine rocks of the Dragoon Mountains (Cochise Stronghold), he outmaneuvered superior forces for eleven years until negotiating an honorable peace in 1872 that granted his people an autonomous reservation in their ancestral mountains.
