"To rise from the earth by the mechanical force of fire is to fulfill the ancient destiny of mankind."

Archival Overview

Visionary French electrical and aviation pioneer who coined the word 'avion' in 1890 and made history on October 9, 1890, when his bat-winged, steam-powered aircraft Éole achieved the first unassisted motorized take-off.

Biographical Record

An ingenious engineer who invented an early telephone receiver and the Théâtrophone (stereo broadcasting of Paris opera over telephone lines in 1881), Ader turned his fortune to aeronautics, studying the flight of vultures and giant fruit bats.

On October 9, 1890, in the park of Château d'Armainvilliers, his steam-powered monoplane Éole, featuring a 20-horsepower alcohol engine and bat-wing silk surfaces, took off under its own power and flew approximately 50 meters, the first motorized hop in history. The French military officially adopted his word 'avion' for military aircraft in 1911.
