Archival Overview

Eminent sociologist and clandestine FLN driver who drove Ramdane Abane across police lines in 1955 and dedicated her life to researching Algerian rural peasantry.

Biographical Record

Claudine Chaulet (born Guillot) married Pierre Chaulet and immediately joined the revolutionary underground in Algiers. In 1955, she personally drove FLN leader Ramdane Abane hidden in her vehicle through French police blockades to enable the preparation of the Soummam Congress.

Becoming an Algerian citizen upon independence in 1962, she joined the University of Algiers as Professor of Sociology. Over four decades, her pioneering field research on agrarian reform, rural women, and peasant cooperatives—epitomized in her landmark book 'La Terre, les frères et l'argent'—revolutionized Algerian sociological science.
