"I write music to escape loneliness, to build a palace of pure sound where love and dreams are possible."

Archival Overview

Visionary Quebec contemporary classical composer whose radiant spectral masterpiece Lonely Child and ritual opera Kopernikus earned worldwide acclaim.

Biographical Record

Claude Vivier was an orphan raised in Montreal who studied composition under Gilles Tremblay and in Cologne under Karlheinz Stockhausen. Journeying through Japan, Thailand, and Bali in 1976, Vivier assimilated Asian gongs, scales, and microtones into a unique personal musical language combining spectral acoustics, ring modulation, and invented phonetic languages.

His 1980 masterpiece for soprano and chamber orchestra, Lonely Child, is hailed internationally as a pinnacle of 20th-century music, radiating haunting spiritual beauty and vulnerability. Vivier's tragic murder in Paris in 1983 cut short one of modern classical music's most luminous trajectories.
