Biographical Record
Claude Gellée, known universally as Claude Lorrain, was a French Baroque painter, draughtsman, and etcher who spent his entire adult career in Rome. Alongside Poussin, he elevated landscape painting from humble background filler into a premier academic genre.
Lorrain was an extraordinary pioneer of natural sunlight, painting luminous golden sunrises and sunsets reflecting across tranquil Italian harbors, classical ruins, and pastoral Roman Campagna fields. To prevent forgeries of his coveted works, he compiled the Liber Veritatis, an album of 195 drawing records of his commissions. His glowing vision of nature fundamentally shaped British landscape gardening and inspired J.M.W. Turner.
