Archival Overview
Towering American saxophonist known as 'The Big Man', whose soulful, soaring tenor sax solos formed the emotional heart of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for four decades.
Biographical Record
Clarence Anicholas Clemons Jr. played college football at Maryland State before a serious car injury steered him entirely toward music. In 1971, he met Bruce Springsteen in Asbury Park, New Jersey, joining the newly formed E Street Band.
Clemons' muscular, expressive saxophone sound became central to classic Springsteen albums like 'Born to Run' (featuring the immortal solo on 'Jungleland') and 'Born in the U.S.A.'. Clemons also scored a solo hit with 'You're a Friend of Mine' with Jackson Browne and performed the iconic sax solo on Lady Gaga's 2011 smash 'The Edge of Glory'.
