Archival Overview
Master Canadian precisionist painter and serigrapher whose architectural compositions of coastal outports, dories, and windows culminated in designing the Newfoundland flag.
Biographical Record
John Christopher Pratt was an internationally recognized Canadian realist painter and printmaker. Raised in St. John's, he studied at Mount Allison University and the Glasgow School of Art before establishing his studio in Salmonier, St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland, where he lived and worked for over sixty years.
Pratt's work is characterized by austere geometry, immaculate surfaces, and profound psychological restraint, depicting clapboard outport rooms, boat hulls, and highway road cuts. In 1980, Premier Brian Peckford commissioned Pratt to design the official provincial flag of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
