Archival Overview
Visionary Norwegian statesman and shipping magnate who served as Prime Minister in 1905, masterminding the peaceful dissolution of the 91-year union with Sweden.
Biographical Record
Peter Christian Hersleb Kjerschow Michelsen was born on March 15, 1857, in Bergen. After building one of Scandinavia's largest shipping firms, he entered national politics as a charismatic liberal leader and Mayor of Bergen.
Assuming the premiership in March 1905 at the head of a national unity coalition, Michelsen deftly engineered the historic resolution of June 7, 1905, declaring the union with Sweden dissolved. Through iron nerve, secret diplomacy, and strategic mobilization, he avoided armed conflict with Sweden and secured the Danish Prince Carl as King Haakon VII. In his will, he bequeathed his fortune to establish the Chr. Michelsen Institute for science and intellectual freedom.
