Acclaimed modernist sculptor who revolutionized 20th-century African art by creating monumental wire and string sculptures, winning the Grand Prix at the 1966 World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar.
Biographical Record
Christian Lattier was born on Christmas Day 1925 in Grand-Samba. Sent to France for schooling at age ten, he entered the prestigious École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, mastering classical sculpture before inventing his own radical, tactile medium.
Abandoning stone and bronze, Lattier hand-wove wire frames wrapped tightly with hemp, cord, and rope, crafting terrifying and majestic figurative sculptures. His monumental masterpiece Le Triomphe de Samory won the premier Grand Prix at the historic Dakar World Festival of Negro Arts in 1966, beating artists from across the black world.
