Biographical Record
Christian Krohg was born on August 13, 1852, in Vestre Aker near Christiania. Educated in law before studying art in Karlsruhe and Berlin, he was deeply influenced by French realism and Émile Zola's naturalism.
Krohg led the avant-garde 'Kristiania Bohemia' circle alongside Hans Jæger. In 1886, he published his novel Albertine, accompanied by his monumental painting Albertine i politilægens venteværelse, exposing the state-sanctioned exploitation of destitute women driven into prostitution. The police immediately confiscated the book, triggering massive student protests. From 1909 until his death, Krohg served as the first director of the Norwegian State Academy of Fine Arts.
