Biographical Record

Christian Atsu Twasam was born in Ada Foah, Greater Accra Region, Ghana, one of ten siblings. Discovered by Portuguese club FC Porto at seventeen, he helped Porto win the Primeira Liga in 2013 before signing with Chelsea. Atsu spent five successful seasons at Newcastle United under Rafael Benítez, making 121 appearances and helping the club earn promotion back to the Premier League in 2017.

For the Black Stars of Ghana, Atsu earned 65 caps and scored 9 goals. At the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, he won both the Player of the Tournament and Goal of the Tournament as Ghana reached the final. Renowned for devout Christian faith and quiet philanthropy, Atsu served as an ambassador for Arms Around the Child, building a school in Ghana and paying legal fines to release hundreds of destitute Ghanaians imprisoned for stealing food. On February 5, 2023, playing for Hatayspor, he scored a 97th-minute free-kick winner; hours later, the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude Turkey–Syria earthquake struck, destroying his apartment block in Antakya.
