Archival Overview
Enigmatic and visionary French filmmaker, photographer, and multimedia artist who invented the modern cinematic essay and created the sci-fi photomontage classic La Jetée (1962).
Biographical Record
Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve served in the French Resistance during World War II and studied philosophy under Jean-Paul Sartre. Adopting the pseudonym Chris Marker, he joined the Left Bank cinema group alongside Alain Resnais and Agnès Varda.
In 1962, Marker created 'La Jetée', a 28-minute post-apocalyptic time-travel masterpiece composed almost entirely of still black-and-white photographs (which inspired Terry Gilliam's '12 Monkeys'). He pioneered the cinematic essay with works like 'Sans Soleil' (1983) and 'A Grin Without a Cat' (1977), exploring memory, political struggle, and digital futures while maintaining an almost mythical personal anonymity.
