Archival Overview

Japan's greatest dramatist (1653–1725), known as the 'Shakespeare of Japan', who authored over a hundred puppet (joruri/bunraku) and kabuki plays exploring the tragic conflict between social duty (giri) and human emotion (ninjo).

Biographical Record

Born into a provincial samurai family, Chikamatsu moved to Kyoto and forged an epochal collaboration with master chanter Takemoto Gidayu at the Takemoto-za theater in Osaka. Together they elevated puppet theatre into a profound art form of psychological realism.

Chikamatsu created the 'sewamono' (domestic tragedy) genre, dramatizing contemporary real-life tragedies of ordinary merchants, shopkeepers, and courtesans trapped by societal obligations, as in 'The Love Suicides at Sonezaki' (1703) and 'The Love Suicides at Amijima' (1721).
