"Even if there were a sword in the hands of everyone, it is will and righteousness that win the kingdom. Never compromise on freedom, self-respect, and justice."

Archival Overview

Visionary 17th-century Indian warrior-king and Chhatrapati who carved the Maratha Empire out of the declining Adilshahi Sultanate and Mughal dominance. Championed Hindavi Swarajya (self-rule), religious tolerance, and naval coastal defense.

Biographical Record

Raised by his mother Jijabai with deep moral and epic traditions, Shivaji captured hill forts as a teenager, pioneering innovative mountain guerrilla warfare (Ganimi Kava) that countered vastly larger imperial armies. In 1674, he was crowned Chhatrapati at the impregnable hill citadel of Raigad.

He built the earliest modern Indian navy, established fortresses along the Konkan coast, enforced strict disciplinary codes protecting civilian women and peasants during wartime, and instituted an efficient council of eight ministers (Ashta Pradhan).
