Archival Overview
Pioneering Algerian singer and composer who revolutionized female Berber vocal music in the 1940s, authoring the timeless classic 'Abeḥri' and preserving the ancestral Achwiq oral tradition.
Biographical Record
Ouardia Boucheml, universally celebrated as Cherifa, defied severe conservative social taboos in the rural Bibans to dedicate her life to song. Fleeing to Algiers in the 1940s, she made history as one of the first women to broadcast live Berber vocal music on Radio Algiers.
Cherifa composed and performed hundreds of unforgettable songs, including 'Abeḥri' and 'Sniwa d Fendjal', combining traditional mountain polyphony with modern orchestration. Her raw, haunting vocal power profoundly inspired later icons like Idir, Lounès Matoub, and Cheikha Rimitti.
