"The lightning strings of his mandolin ignited a musical revolution for human dignity."

Archival Overview

Founder, mandocello virtuoso, and chief composer of the groundbreaking Moroccan protest group Lemchaheb, who fused Maghrebi rhythms with electric mandolin, rock, and polyphonic vocal counterpoints.

Biographical Record

Cherif Lamrani was an extraordinary musical innovator who founded Lemchaheb in Casablanca in 1974. An exceptional virtuoso on the mandocello and electric mandolin, Lamrani created a hard-driving, polyphonic fusion combining Gnawa, Sahrawi, and Berber melodies with modern rock and reggae tempos.

With poetically explosive lyrics addressing social oppression and Palestinian solidarity, Lemchaheb toured worldwide, collaborating with German rock band Dissidenten on the seminal album Sahara Elektrik.
