Biographical Record
Cherif Kheddam was raised in a traditional Quranic zawiya in the mountains of Kabylie. Moving to Paris as a foundry worker in 1947, he enrolled in rigorous evening courses at the Paris Conservatoire, studying classical counterpoint, harmony, and orchestration under French masters.
Kheddam applied Western symphonic orchestration to authentic Berber pentatonic modes, creating monumental compositions like 'Lemsafer', 'Nadia', and 'Slit u Ghenja'. As producer at Channel 2 of Radio Algiers, he discovered and trained dozens of future superstars, cementing his legacy as the founding father of modern Amazigh orchestration.
