Archival Overview

Legendary Saharan guerrilla commander who mobilized the desert tribes of Ouargla, Touggourt, and the M'zab from 1862 to 1874 against French colonial conquest.

Biographical Record

A master horseman and desert strategist, Cherif Bouchoucha rose during the widespread 1871 Mokrani uprising to launch lightning cavalry raids across the northern and central Sahara. Uniting the Chaamba, Beni M'zab, and Touareg confederations, he expelled French garrisons from Touggourt and liberated Ouargla.

For over a decade, French punitive expeditions failed to capture him in the desert expanses. Betrayed in 1874, he was court-martialed in Constantine and faced the firing squad with stoic defiance in June 1875.
