Archival Overview
Pioneering female Algerian classical musician, violin virtuoso, and singer who broke societal barriers to become the undisputed premier female performer of Tlemcen Hawzi and Andalusian poetry.
Biographical Record
Fatima Tlemcani, known as Cheikha Tetma, was raised in an aristocratic Andalusian family in Tlemcen. Showing extraordinary musical ear, she mastered the violin, kouitra, and mandolin, mastering complex melodic cycles that were previously restricted exclusively to male ensembles.
Tetma formed her own celebrated orchestra, traveling across North Africa and Paris to record over one hundred masterworks, including the immortal Hawzi ballad 'Nar Houaki Qatlatni'. Her impeccable phrasing, aristocratic demeanor, and deep musicological erudition made her a revered legend of Maghrebi art music.
