Biographical Record
Son of Cheikh Mohamed El Fadel, Cheikh Tourad was a master of Arabic literature, Islamic jurisprudence, and Sufi metaphysics. He established mobile mahadras (desert universities) that taught nomads and freed slaves throughout southeastern Mauritania.
His moral authority enabled him to extinguish inter-tribal warfare across the Sahara, negotiating famous peace pacts between the Awlad Nasser, Reguibat, and Mechdouf tribes. He passed away at the extraordinary age of over one hundred.
