Biographical Record
Cheikh Sidiyya Baba al-Kabir spent thirty years studying under the greatest masters of the Sahara, including Sidi al-Mukhtar al-Kunti in the Azawad. Returning to southwestern Mauritania, he established his great scholarly center in Boutilimit.
Possessing supreme legal authority, he mediated centuries-old blood feuds between nomadic emirates, negotiated trade pacts with French trading stations in Saint-Louis while preserving Islamic legal autonomy, and built a manuscript library of thousands of rare volumes that made Boutilimit the Athens of the Sahara.
