Archival Overview
Legendary 19th-century Kabyle spiritual sage, peacemaker, and oral philosopher whose poetic aphorisms shaped the ethical conscience of the Amazigh people.
Biographical Record
Hailing from the village of Takka near Tizi Rached, Cheikh Mohand ou Lhocine was the premier moral arbitrator of the Djurdjura highlands. He established a peaceful sanctuary where feuding tribes, impoverished travelers, and persecuted fighters found food, judgment, and protection.
His legendary philosophical jousts with wandering poet Si Mohand ou Mhand synthesized Sufi transcendence with indigenous customary law (azerf), counseling self-respect, compassion, and silent resistance against colonial rule.
