Biographical Record
Cheikh Mohand Amzian El Haddad (c. 1790–1873) was the venerated spiritual guide of the Rahmaniyya zawiya in the Soummam Valley, commanding the absolute loyalty of over 100,000 initiated disciples. Highly revered for his piety and asceticism, he had long watched French confiscation of fertile tribal lands.
On April 8, 1871, at the market square of Seddouk, the eighty-year-old sheikh threw his walking staff into the air and declared: 'We wish to throw the French into the sea as I throw this staff to the ground.' His call transformed Mokrani's tribal revolt into an unstoppable mass national insurrection across eastern Algeria.
