Revered 80-year-old spiritual master of the Rahmaniyya Sufi order who threw his walking stick into the air on April 8, 1871, mobilizing 250,000 fighters across Kabylie in the greatest anti-colonial uprising of the 19th century.
Biographical Record
Cheikh Mohamed Amzian Belhaddad was the undisputed spiritual patriarch of the Soummam valley and head of the Rahmaniyya zawiya of Seddouk. On April 8, 1871, in the market square of Seddouk, he made the epochal declaration proclaiming a war of liberation alongside Cheikh El Mokrani.
His moral authority ignited the entire Kabylie range from Dellys to Sétif. After months of grueling warfare against modern artillery, he was captured and sentenced to prison in Constantine, where he died in captivity in 1873. His remains were reinterred in Seddouk in 2009 with national honors.
