Archival Overview

Legendary Tuareg war chief who waged an unrelenting forty-year armed struggle against French colonial conquest of the Sahara from 1881 to 1923.

Biographical Record

Cheikh Amoud Ben Mokhtar was the revered supreme commander of the Kel Ajjer and Kel Ahaggar Tuareg resistance. In 1881, his warriors wiped out the colonial Flatters military expedition in the desert dunes, halting French penetration of the central Sahara for over two decades.

Operating across thousands of square kilometers in the Tassili n'Ajjer and Hoggar, Amoud fought with sublime camel-cavalry mobility and tactical mastery. Even after the tragic Battle of Tit in 1902, he continued organizing desert ambushes and attacks until 1923, standing as an immortal symbol of indigenous African sovereignty and resistance.
