Archival Overview
Celebrated as the 'Amir al-Shu'ara' (Prince of Poets) of Tunisia, he was the master of classical neoclassical Arabic verse who used courtly panegyric to deliver subtle anti-colonial patriotic messages.
Biographical Record
Scion of the aristocratic Khaznadar family of Tunis, Chedly was educated by private tutors in the Dar El Bey before mastering the classical poetic divans of Al-Mutanabbi and Shawqi. Appointed official Beylical Court Poet, his sweeping classical qasidas were published in journals across the Arab world.
During the rise of the Young Tunisian and Destour movements, his patriotic odes praised Tunisian historical sovereignty, celebrated the Great Mosque of Zitouna, and defied French protectorate censorship with allegorical classical verse, revered as Tunisia's counterpart to Ahmad Shawqi.
