Biographical Record
Hasni Chakroun (1968–1994) grew up in the working-class Gambetta neighborhood of Oran and was an avid junior footballer for ASMO before discovering his vocal talent. In 1987, his breakthrough duet Beraka with Chaba Zahouania exploded across Algerian cassettes, pioneering the softer, deeply emotional subgenre of 'Raï Sentimental'.
Hasni recorded an astonishing 150 albums in seven years, expressing the intimate romantic joys, economic frustrations, and visa dreams of Algerian youth during the turbulent 1990s. Courageously refusing to flee to France amidst escalating extremist death threats, he was gunned down outside his parents' home in Oran on September 29, 1994, mourned by hundreds of thousands of weeping youths.
