Archival Overview
Last Valois Duke of Burgundy whose relentless ambition to connect his Flemish and Burgundian realms into an independent kingdom ended with his battlefield death at Nancy, reshaping European geopolitics.
Biographical Record
Ascending the ducal throne in 1467, Charles imposed strict administrative centralisation on the Flemish communes, crushed revolts in Liège, Dinant, and Ghent, and established the Parliament of Mechelen as the supreme supreme court of the Low Countries.
His grand strategic aim to annex Lorraine and Alsace brought him into catastrophic conflict with the Swiss Confederacy and King Louis XI of France. His death at the Battle of Nancy in 1477 precipitated the Burgundian Succession crisis and the rise of Habsburg power.
