"The red fox ran through the silver birches, free in the wild kingdom of the north."

Archival Overview

Regarded as the 'Father of Canadian Poetry', who led the Confederation Poets with Orion (1880) and invented the modern realistic animal story in works like Red Fox and Earth's Enigmas.

Biographical Record

Raised in the Tantramar marshlands of New Brunswick, Roberts published Orion, and Other Poems in 1880, a collection that inspired Archibald Lampman and galvanized the first cohesive Canadian literary movement.

Moving to New York and Europe, Roberts pioneered the realistic wildlife story, portraying wild animals from their own perspective without anthropomorphic sentimentality. Knighted in 1935 as Canada's premier man of letters, he published over sixty volumes of poetry and prose.
