Archival Overview
Pioneering French theatrical director and actor from Savoie, co-founder of the Cartel des Quatre, who established the Théâtre de l'Atelier at Montmartre in 1922 and trained Jean-Louis Barrault, Marcel Marceau, and Jean Vilar.
Biographical Record
The youngest of eighteen children in Savoie, Dullin lived in bohemian poverty in Paris, reciting poetry at the Lapin Agile cabaret before joining Jacques Copeau at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in 1913, mastering physical improvisation and commedia dell'arte.
In 1922, he founded the Théâtre de l'Atelier on Place Dancourt (now Place Charles-Dullin), demanding absolute artistic purity, bodily discipline, and respect for texts over commercial theater. His stagings of Ben Jonson's Volpone and Shakespeare were legendary, and his masterclasses created the modern French theatrical renaissance.
