Archival Overview
Ancient Indian physician and philosopher who compiled the Charaka Samhita, the foundational treatise of Ayurvedic internal medicine, cellular biology, and medical ethics.
Biographical Record
Charaka (c. 300–150 BCE), revered across the Indian subcontinent as an itinerant master physician (*Charaka* meaning wanderer), studied and lectured at the great university city of Takshashila. His masterwork, the Charaka Samhita, formulated a comprehensive science of life, dietetics, pathology, and therapeutics.
Charaka understood that health is a dynamic balance of metabolism, digestion (*Agni*), and three biological humors (*Vata, Pitta, Kapha*). He emphasized the psychosomatic unity of mind and body, and authored an ancient medical oath requiring physicians to dedicate themselves to patient welfare with utter humility and purity of heart.
