"I gave space to things that were never given space before: the daily gestures of a woman at her kitchen sink."

Archival Overview

Visionary Belgian avant-garde filmmaker whose 1975 masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles was voted the Greatest Film of All Time in the prestigious 2022 Sight & Sound decennial poll.

Biographical Record

Daughter of Polish Holocaust survivors in Brussels, Akerman decided to make films at age fifteen after viewing Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le Fou. Moving between Brussels, Paris, and New York, she developed an austere, hypnotically precise cinematic grammar emphasizing real-time domestic duration.

At age twenty-five, she directed Jeanne Dielman (1975), starring Delphine Seyrig as a bourgeois Brussels housewife whose daily ritualized cooking and cleaning conceal desperate alienation. Her films, including News from Home and No Home Movie, transformed feminist theory and global independent cinema.
