Biographical Record

Chandrashekhar Tiwari was arrested at age fifteen during Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement; when asked his name by the magistrate, he famously answered 'Azad' (The Free). Following Gandhi's suspension of the movement, Azad reorganized militant youth into the HSRA.

As commander-in-chief, Azad directed operations including the Kakori train robbery and mentored young revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh. Surrounded by colonial police at Alfred Park in Allahabad in 1931, he fought a fierce gun battle and used his final bullet on himself to keep his vow never to be captured.
