"One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and ready to offer all respect to others."

Archival Overview

Fifteenth-century saint, mystic, and divine messenger who initiated the congregational chanting of the holy names (Sankirtana) throughout India, democratizing spiritual practice across all castes and creeds.

Biographical Record

Born in Bengal during a lunar eclipse, Vishvambhar Mishra was a brilliant child prodigy in logic before having a life-altering mystical experience at Gaya. Renouncing worldly life, he took the sannyasa name Sri Krishna Chaitanya and inaugurated ecstatic public chanting processions.

He spent the final two decades of his life at Jagannath Puri, teaching that pure love of God (Prema) transcends caste hierarchy, gender barriers, and formal rituals, composing the eight verses of the Siksastaka.
