Biographical Record

Chaim Vital (1542–1620 CE) was born in Safed and became the chosen stenographer and chief disciple of Rabbi Isaac Luria.

Following the Ari's untimely death in 1572, Vital compiled his master's oral teachings into the definitive authoritative canon, notably the eight-volume Shemonah She'arim.
