"The colors come to me in my sleep; I do not choose them, they choose me to speak for the earth."

Archival Overview

Celebrated self-taught Moroccan painter from Chtouka whose vibrant, raw, and uninhibited canvases of rural women and feasts earned global acclaim from the CoBrA movement and the Salon d'Automne in Paris.

Biographical Record

Chaïbia Talal (1929–2004) was married at age thirteen to a much older man, widowed at fourteen, and raised her son, painter Hossein Talal, while working as a domestic maid in Casablanca. At age thirty-six, she experienced a powerful dream commanding her to paint.

With zero formal training, Chaïbia grabbed canvas and house paint, creating swirling, electric compositions of rural female dancers, henna rituals, and village weddings exploding with primary colors. In 1966, French art critic Pierre Gaudibert, director of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, visited her home, astonished by her raw genius, organizing exhibitions in Paris, Copenhagen, and New York alongside Joan Miró and Karel Appel.
