Biographical Record
Born in a high-Andean mining camp, Chabuca Granda (1920–1983) moved to Lima as a child. In 1950, inspired by Victoria Angulo, an Afro-Peruvian laundrywoman, she composed 'La flor de la canela' ('The Cinnamon Flower'), an exquisite Peruvian waltz that became Lima's unofficial anthem.
Granda transformed traditional Peruvian music, incorporating Afro-Peruvian cajon rhythms and landos in later works like 'El surco' and 'Fina estampa'. Her sophisticated melodies and poetic lyrics celebrating Afro-Peruvian culture made her an immortal ambassador of South American music.
