Biographical Record
Cesar Vallejo (1892–1938) grew up in the Andean highlands of Peru. After unjust imprisonment in Trujillo in 1920, he published 'Trilce' in 1922—a radical masterpiece that shattered conventional Spanish syntax, orthography, and grammar to articulate raw human suffering, indigenous dignity, and existential anguish.
Moving to Paris and Madrid, Vallejo embraced revolutionary politics, joined the Anti-Fascist Writers' Alliance during the Spanish Civil War, and penned 'Espana, aparta de mi este caliz' and 'Poemas humanos' before succumbing to a mysterious illness in Paris on Good Friday 1938.
