Biographical Record
Cesar Milstein (1927–2002) studied chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires before political turmoil led him to settle permanently at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. In 1975, alongside Georges Kohler, he fused antibody-producing B cells with immortal myeloma cells.
This hybridoma technique enabled the unlimited production of identical monoclonal antibodies, transforming medical diagnostics, cancer treatments, immunology, and vaccine design. Refusing to patent the method, Milstein ensured it remained universally accessible.
