Archival Overview
Trailblazing female visual artist who introduced the modern nude, post-impressionism, and African aesthetic dignity to Dominican art, establishing the country's first modern art studio school in 1924.
Biographical Record
Celeste Woss y Gil was born on May 5, 1891, in Santo Domingo, daughter of former President Alejandro Woss y Gil. Living in political exile in France and the United States, she studied at the Art Students League of New York under George Luks and Frank DuMond.
Returning to Santo Domingo in 1924, she opened an art academy in her courtyard, introducing modern female and male nude live modeling to the scandalized conservative public. Her powerful paintings, such as El baño and portraits of Afro-Dominican women, placed the human figure and racial heritage at the center of modern Caribbean art.
