"No torture from your hands can make a Mapuche tremble; though you take my life, another thousand warriors will rise from the forest to defend our land."

Archival Overview

Legendary Mapuche supreme war chief (Toqui) celebrated in Alonso de Ercilla's epic 'La Araucana', who won leadership by carrying a colossal tree trunk on his shoulders for two days and two nights, leading the Mapuche in epic resistance against Spanish conquest.

Biographical Record

Caupolicán (c. 1515–1558) was elected Toqui by the Mapuche council after proving unmatched endurance in the trial of the log, holding a massive tree trunk aloft without food for forty-eight hours. Partnering with the brilliant young tactician Lautaro, Caupolicán commanded the great confederation during the Arauco War.

Caupolicán led Mapuche forces at Tucapel, Marihueñu, and the siege of Cañete, preventing the Spanish conquest of southern Chile for centuries. Captured through betrayal in 1558, he mounted the execution platform in Cañete and kicked the executioner aside to impale himself with unyielding contempt.
