Archival Overview
Pioneering Canadian naturalist, illustrator, and author whose The Backwoods of Canada and Studies of Plant Life documented Canadian wild flora and pioneer survival.
Biographical Record
Catharine Parr Traill, sister of Susanna Moodie, emigrated to Upper Canada in 1832 and settled near Lakefield. Bringing a resilient, optimistic spirit to pioneer life, Traill took an intense scientific interest in the native plants and Indigenous botanical lore of Ontario.
Her 1836 book, The Backwoods of Canada, offered practical guidance and poetic wonder for immigrant women. She went on to author Canadian Wild Flowers (1868) and Studies of Plant Life in Canada (1885), illustrated by her niece Agnes FitzGibbon, establishing her as one of North America's earliest female naturalists.
